Women in law roundtable discussions across the regions

The Law Society is deeply committed to promoting equality and inclusion in the profession. One of the key aims for the year ahead is to develop an international platform for women and men to discuss how to support women in leadership roles, because we know that gender balance boosts productivity and innovation. Christina Blacklaws has chosen this area of work as one of the major focuses for her presidential year which begins in July this year.

This is why, alongside the Women’s Lawyers Division, we have launched a programme of work which aims to achieve equality for women within the legal profession both in our jurisdiction as well as internationally. It has three main objectives:

  • To highlight the issues preventing parity of women with the support of statistical data from quantitative and qualitative research.
  • To develop a network of international female lawyers to support one another in the shared objective of achieving gender equality.
  • To empower women to succeed and to aspire to positions of leadership in the profession and inspire other women to stay in the profession and engender change from within.

As part of the project, we developed a global quantitative survey to build on our research. We have the support of Lexis Nexis and the International Bar Association in this. We asked as many people in the legal world as possible, men and women across all jurisdictions internationally, to share their views and experiences. The survey received over 7,800 responses!

The data we have gathered will be part of a wider report which will be launched next year and used alongside qualitative data which we plan to collate from a series of roundtable discussions with members across the country.

2018 marks the 100th anniversary of women achieving the vote and in 2019 we will celebrate the centenary of women lawyers - which will fall within Christina’s Presidential year. We are planning a series of events to highlight the outcomes of our global research and to actively engage with all colleagues - male and female, to show that equality and diversity is good for business and good for all of us globally.

Christina’s aim is that we can effect change to ensure that we retain and build upon the talent and experience of women lawyers in our firms and businesses.
