SRA: Protecting the users of legal services - balancing cost and access to legal services

JLD responds to SRA consultation on PII reform proposals.

In March 2018 the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) published proposals on changes to make sure people get the right level of protection when using a solicitor or law firm, and in turn benefit from a more competitive marketplace and increased choice. It is claimed that their Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) proposals will give firms more flexibility to choose the right level of insurance to suit their business and clients. While their Compensation Fund proposals are designed to make sure financial support is focussed on those most in need of help.

The consultation closed on 15 June 2018 but the full proposals are available to read online.

The Junior Lawyers Division’s (JLD) response to the consultation is available to download below.

The JLD would like to thank Nick Gova, director of Garrick Law Ltd and the JLD national committee representative of the Berks Bucks & Oxon JLD for preparing this response on behalf of the JLD. Nick Gova attends JLD national committee meetings held at the Law Society and therefore works with the JLD executive committee combating issues that affect junior lawyers throughout England and Wales. Being a director of a law firm and a junior lawyer, the JLD felt that it was entirely appropriate, based on his wealth of experience, to seek the views of Nick Gova in response to this consultation.
