English Law Week in Russia 2019

We held our tenth English Law Week in Russia with the Bar Council of England and Wales.

From 11 to 15 November, we held our flagship conference in Moscow and St Petersburg organised in partnership with the:

  • Bar Council of England and Wales
  • British Embassy in Moscow
  • Russian Federal Chamber of Lawyers
  • Moscow Chamber of Advocates
  • St Petersburg Chamber of Advocates
  • Anglo-Russian Law Association
  • British Russian Law Association

The conference concluded with a tenth anniversary gala dinner to celebrate a decade of friendships, legal links and business between the two countries.

The conference was a great success, with many of the British delegates taking part in both Moscow and St Petersburg finding it very worthwhile.

Over 340 delegates registered to attend events during the four-day conference, with over 100 attending each day at the Lotte Hotel in St Petersburg and the British Embassy in Moscow.

This was our second event in St Petersburg since the conference expanded as a result of member feedback, support from the Russian bars, and to reflect importance of the city as a business centre.

Law Society of England and Wales president, Simon Davis, attended with Richard Atkins QC, chair of the Bar Council of England and Wales.

President Simon Davis said:

“Our global network of English and Welsh solicitor firms, and their use of the law of England and Wales, contributes to UK Plc and supports international trade with the UK. Spending time with our Russian colleagues sharing ideas and expertise is a shining example of how the international legal community can develop mutual understanding in the interests of our individual and corporate clients.”

Delegates included:

  • Irina Gritsanova, director of the international division of the Moscow Chamber of Lawyers
  • Elena Avakyan, adviser to the president of the Russian Federal Chamber of Lawyers
  • Konstantin Dobrynin, state secretary of the Russian Federal Chamber of Lawyers
  • Jackie Van Haersolte-van HOF, director general of the London Court of Arbitration
  • Trevor Lewis, director of the Department for International Trade, British Embassy, Moscow
  • Lindsay Skoll, deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Moscow

Expert panels of solicitors, barristers and Russian Advocates addressed topics including Brexit, trends in personal and corporate structuring, English judgments involving Russian parties, the use of English law in business transactions between Russian parties, sanctions, international arbitration and Lawtech.

At the Oxford Union debate in St Petersburg, there was strong interest in continuing to use English law and in England and Wales as a jurisdiction for cross-border contracts and disputes, despite Brexit.

Our twin event, Russian Law Week, will be held in London in autumn 2020.

Delegate Artem Doudko, partner at Osborne Clarke said:

“It was definitely the right move to come back to St Petersburg this year. We had a great turn out of local lawyers attending both days of the conference as well as many additional guests who travelled from Moscow and England. The guests not only listened to the speakers, but also engaged with their own comments and questions, which always makes any event much more lively and interactive…record numbers have registered to attend and the culmination of the 10th anniversary gala dinner.”

Delegate Fiona Fitzgerald, chief executive at Radcliffe Chambers said:

“Many thanks to General Council of the Bar of England and Wales The Law Society and Department for International Trade (DIT) for organising English Law Week in Russia. A great welcome was had in both St. Petersburg and Moscow”

Delegate Shantanu Majumdar, barrister at Radcliffe Chambers commented:

“It was a remarkable event. Very informative and thought provoking. It was great to make new acquaintances and meet so many old friends and colleagues.”
