Simon Davis, president of the Law Society of England and Wales, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Warsaw Bar Association of Advocates, represented by Dean Mikołaj Pietrzak.

The agreement outlines our shared commitments to:

  • cooperate in the interests of our members
  • raise awareness of our respective legal systems and business environments
  • promote vocational training opportunities
  • work together to promote and protect the rule of law

Warsaw is an increasingly international city that attracts a lot of foreign investment and presents excellent business opportunities for our members.

There are 17 UK law firms with offices in Poland including Allen and Overy, Clifford Chance, CMS Cameron McKenna, DLA Piper, Eversheds, Norton Rose Fulbright and Hogan Lovells.

In 2015, we launched a Doing legal business in Poland guide that gives an overview of the legal profession, the legal services market and the regulations for foreign lawyers and law firms in the country.

We hope to continue to work closely with all parts of the Polish legal profession to maximise mutual benefits to our members.

Close cooperation and exchanges between our European colleagues have always been at the heart of our profession, and this agreement underscores that commitment.

England and Wales is, and will remain, an open and internationally orientated jurisdiction. We're confident our solicitors in England and Wales will warmly welcome such collaborative initiatives with our colleagues in Poland.

We recognise the important role that lawyers play in both our jurisdictions in upholding the rule of law.

The signing ceremony was followed by a seminar to mark Human Rights Day 2019, focusing on the rise of authoritarianism in Europe and new legislation in Poland that threatens judicial independence.

It's important that we continue dialogue and cooperation between our jurisdictions and support our Polish colleagues at this challenging time.
