UK seeks to lock in legal services market in Mexico

We welcome the launch of free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations between the UK and Mexican governments on 20 May 2022. It’s hoped that an FTA will drive increased trade and provide new opportunities for solicitors and firms.

International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan and her Mexican counterpart Secretary of Economy Tatiana Clouthier met in London to formally launch negotiations.

Our president Stephanie Boyce made a statement supporting the negotiations.

She said: “we welcome the start of these trade negotiations, as Mexico is a priority market in the Latin America region for our members.”

The deal highlights the commercial opportunities available there for law firms, particularly in sectors such as:

  • banking and finance
  • insurance
  • reinsurance
  • infrastructure
  • energy
  • telecommunications
  • fintech

“A trade agreement with modernised provisions on services and digital assets will help drive increased trade and provide opportunities for our members.”

We worked to ensure that market access for legal services is a priority in the FTA negotiations by:

  • contributing to the UK government’s prior consultations
  • working closely with the Ministry of Justice (MoJ)
  • collaborating with members and law firms with an interest in the Mexican legal services market

We will continue to monitor the negotiations to make sure that the agreement is of the greatest benefit to our members.
