Why stand for election?
Our Council is the main oversight body within the Law Society.
Elected Council members play an important role in helping us achieve our vision of promoting, protecting, and supporting solicitors, the rule of law and justice in England and Wales.
Council members are elected or appointed by the profession to champion the views of their constituents as we develop our member offer.
We have almost 100 solicitors sitting on our Council – 50 representing geographic areas and 47 representing a work practice or characteristic.
Being on Council puts you at the heart of setting the strategic direction of your professional body.
You’ll have the chance to be directly involved in debating our priorities for the profession, whilst helping us deliver trusted resources and a comprehensive package of support for our members.
It’s also an opportunity to connect with your peers from across the profession, with a range of practice areas and backgrounds.
How to stand for election
You must be a member of the Law Society to be eligible to stand for election to Council.
If you’re on the roll of solicitors, you’re automatically a Law Society member.
If you have a work or home address in the eligible postcodes and wish to stand for election, you must complete a nomination form.
You need two other Law Society members with registered work or home addresses in one of the eligible postcodes to support your nomination.
