Preliminary notice of council elections 2020

Preliminary notice is hereby given, in accordance with Bye-Law 49, that elections of members of the Council will shortly be taking place for the following constituencies, which will fall vacant on the expiry of the terms of office of the current Council member at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 15 October 2020:

  • 2 - The City of London
  • 3 – Holborn
  • 4 – North East London
  • 5 – West London
  • 8 – City of Westminster
  • 12 – Inner Sussex (Casual vacancy until 2021)
  • 17 – Dorset
  • 18 – West Country & Gwent
  • 20 – Mid and West Wales
  • 22 – Coventry and Warwickshire (Casual vacancy until 2021)
  • 24 – Wolverhampton and Staffordshire
  • 26 – Merseyside and District
  • 27 – Manchester, Salford, Stockport and District
  • 29 – Cumbria and Lancaster
  • 30 – Northumbria
  • 31 – Yorkshire
  • 34 – Lincolnshire
  • 40 – Essex

The Society wishes to encourage nominations from all eligible solicitors irrespective of gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation or disability.

Nominations should be received by the Chief Executive, The Law Society, 113 Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1PL (DX 56 Lon/Chancery Ln) no later than 12.00 hours on Friday 17 July 2020.*

Term of office

The successful candidates will take office at the conclusion of the AGM on 15 October 2020.

Unless otherwise stated, the normal term of office of a Council member is four years except for the Junior Lawyers Division (trainee solicitors/LPC students) member whose term is two years. Please note, however, that the Law Society is currently undertaking a governance review as a result of which current arrangements may change in the future. If a Council member is elected to a vacancy arising other than on the four-year rotation, he or she will serve only the uncompleted term of his or her predecessor.

Induction

Those elected will be invited to an induction meeting currently planned for the afternoon of 13 October 2020 (the afternoon before the first Council meeting of the 2020/21 cycle which will be on 14 October).
