Winners of the Law Society Excellence Awards 2011

The outstanding achievements of the legal profession in England and Wales have been celebrated by the Law Society at a prestigious ceremony in London.

Over 600 legal professionals and their guests joined the President of the Law Society John Wotton and BBC Broadcaster Mishal Husain at a presentation ceremony at Old Billingsgate last night.

The annual awards recognise the most outstanding legal practitioners in their field and are open to individuals and teams across the entire legal sector.

They are designed to recognise best practice and to celebrate excellence and outstanding achievement in areas that are central to the profession today.

The awards highlight innovative business practices, successful approaches to practice management as well as contributions through social responsibility and equality and diversity initiatives.

Law Society President John Wotton said winning a Law Society Excellence Award is a great achievement and brings valuable recognition for individuals and firms.

'The winners of these awards should be very proud of this superb accolade.

“The legal profession faces fresh challenges and greater competition resulting from the Legal Services Act. Excellence is the foundation of success in this new competitive environment where legal practitioners need to stand out from other service providers in order to thrive.

“Winning an Excellence Award is more than recognition from professional colleagues, it is also a symbol of quality for members of the public highlighting professional excellence and a commitment to providing a high quality service to clients.

'These awards reflect the Law Society's commitment to celebrating excellence in the legal profession.”

The Law Society Gazette Legal Personality of the Year was presented to Jo Cooper, Perrin Buildings Chambers.

Paul Rogerson, Editor of the Law Society Gazette said: “Jo won this award for his tireless efforts promoting the cause of solicitor-advocacy at a difficult time for the profession, in particular in respect of the controversial Quality Assurance Scheme for advocates.”

Phil Shiner, Public Interest Lawyers Ltd, was highly commended in this category.

The awards were attended by several luminaries of the British justice system including Lord McNally, Baroness Hamwee, Rt Hon Dominic Grieve MP, Edward Garnier QC MP and Lord Bach.
