As threats against lawyers and the rule of law surge globally, the Law Society of England and Wales has opened its first ever exhibition on lawyers at risk.
‘On the front line for justice’ showcases powerful stories of resilience and courage through artwork and mixed media in honour of those who have lost their life, been imprisoned or targeted for their work*.
Featured pieces include ‘two hundred and thirty eight’, the visual and sound-based installation inspired by the life of Ebru Timtik, a human rights lawyer who died in prison following a hunger strike protesting the denial of fair trial rights in Turkey.
Law Society president, Mark Evans, said: “It is a privilege to host this exhibition, as we welcome lawyers, their families and the wider public to reflect on the world in which many lawyers cannot freely practise.
“Across the globe, lawyers are silenced, sentenced and stripped of their rights because they stand on the front-line defending justice and the rule of law.
“This exhibition shines a light on their resilience and the urgent need to protect the independence of the legal profession.
“We encourage everyone to honour these individuals and learn more about the ongoing fight for the rule of law.”
