Independent review of the criminal courts
We urge the UK government to make a sustained and strategic investment across the system, including in the defence profession and the courts.
We welcome recommendations to:
- strengthen early-stage processes to reduce delays
- rebuild the criminal defence workforce through investment in legal aid and training
- address longstanding issues with prisoner transport
- modernise the justice system and adopt new technology – provided it enhances access to justice, is reliable and ensures fairness
We’re concerned about routine use of remote police station advice and remote first hearings, which risk undermining fairness, efficiency, effective participation and justice.
We welcome recent government announcements on increased sitting days, video infrastructure investment and additional court staff, but they must form part of a broader, evidence‑based package of reforms and investment.
We urge the government to invest across the system to deliver long-term improvement.
