Virtual court first hearings

Since 2009 magistrates’ courts have been able to conduct first hearings of criminal cases using a live link between the court and police stations. This means defendants can appear in court without being physically present.

This practice notes addresses some of the issues that solicitors may have to deal with in these cases.

This practice note is the Law Society’s view of good practice in this area, and is not legal advice. For more information see the legal status.
