Solicitors are at the heart of all we do.

We’re here to champion, protect and support your interests and those of future solicitors to follow.

We want to hear your views on how our share of the practising certificate (PC) fee should be used to deliver the resources, guidance and support solicitors need to thrive.

Your insights will make sure we’re focused on the right priorities for the year ahead.

Take 10 minutes to share your thoughts and encourage others to do so too. All responses will be anonymous.  You’ll also have the option to enter a prize draw to win one of five £150 John Lewis vouchers.

Championing the impact solicitors make

We believe that the solicitor profession is an enormous force for good.

Whether working in private practice or in-house, solicitors provide essential advice and services to individuals, families, businesses and the wider public across the country and internationally.

The legal services sector is also an economic powerhouse. It’s a growing industry that touches every high street, adds over £60 billion to the UK economy every year and is a valuable source of employment to over half a million people.

As a solicitor, you’re automatically a member of the Law Society. We are proud to be your professional body, and it’s our job to represent you and the best interests of the profession.

Putting our plans into action

Our 2025-2028 corporate strategy addresses the contemporary challenges that matter most to our members:

To make sure this strategy continues to reflect the needs of solicitors from all backgrounds and practice areas, we want your views on what we should prioritise over the next year.

With your input we can make sure we’re continuing to advocate for solicitors on the issues that matter most.

What is the PC fee?

Most solicitors in England and Wales pay an annual PC fee. It is paid by solicitors or by their firm or employer on their behalf.

The PC fee is used to fund:

  • the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA)
  • the Law Society
  • levies paid to fund the activities of the Legal Ombudsman (LeO)
  • the Legal Services Board (LSB)
  • the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT)
  • the Office for Professional Body Anti-Money Laundering Supervision (OPBAS)

We receive a share of the PC fee, which makes up the majority of our funding and determines what we can achieve for you, the profession and wider society.

This consultation only relates to the proportion of funds received by the Law Society from the PC fee. Our proportion varies based on the total funding requirement by the other bodies. We anticipate our share will be approximately 25%.
