Template job description for in-house solicitors

Introduction

This template job description can be used when advertising for an in-house solicitor and to clarify their responsibilities when in role.

This template has been designed to be adaptable to different roles, seniorities, sectors and industries.

However, it would not suit, for example, a litigation role – the nature of which is too distinctive (for example, more specialist and less advisory) to be included in a generic template such as this one.

It can be edited to take account of individual circumstances. We have indicated some areas in which editing is particularly likely to be required.

Job titles for in-house solicitors vary depending on the industry and nature of the relevant organisation.

The 'general counsel' is typically the most senior solicitor in the team, though some organisations use the title 'legal director' or 'chief legal officer', which may be considered to denote greater seniority.

Some organisations appoint general counsel for different areas of work or departments.

Whichever title is used, the topmost solicitor in the organisation typically has responsibility for all legal matters. It is important they have full remit and access to relevant information.

'Head of legal' is a title often used for lawyers brought in to lead a function and who report to the general counsel, but whose remit is considered more operational than strategic.

The differences can be subtle and poorly understood.

Titles may also depend on the size and nature of the organisation.

It is also important for expectations and any constraints on remit and responsibility to be clearly documented.

Other solicitors in the legal team may hold the job titles of 'legal adviser', 'legal counsel' or similar.

Solicitors employed to fulfil specialist or, for example, roles in the areas of corporate law or intellectual property will have specific responsibilities delineated to their expertise.

However, they remain bound by the same professional and regulatory duties as the most senior lawyer in the organisation.
