Applying for silk as a solicitor

Find out how you can become a King’s Counsel (KC) at an event with the KC selection panel on 23 September.

We’re holding an event with the King’s Counsel Appointments (KCA) for solicitor advocates considering applying to become a KC.

More solicitors are needed on King’s Counsel. We know many of you have the valuable skills and experience to apply and would enrich the current pool of KCs.

At the event, you’ll hear from KC Selection Panel members Monisha Shah (Chair) and John Montague (solicitor).

They will discuss the application process and answer any of your questions.

You will also hear from Law Society chief executive Ian Jeffery.

Resources

KC status is awarded to advocates who are at the very top of their field.

Despite the perception that only barristers can apply; solicitors who are qualified to act as an advocate in the highest courts have been eligible for KC status since 1995.

KC status shows colleagues, courts and clients that you are an elite advocate, equipped to deal with the most complex cases and are considered a leader in your field.
