Can I charge a client for storage of documents?

Can I charge my client for storage, copying or production of old records and documents?

Yes, provided your retainer has set out any charges you propose making for storage, copying the file or producing a document from storage.

You might consider reminding the client that there is a cost to your business for storage and retrieval of documents from deep storage, particularly where the material is kept off site.

For further information, see our practice note on client information requirements.
