Equality and diversity

  • We're committed to attracting the most able candidates to the legal profession and reflecting the diversity of our society. We help the legal profession to be inclusive. Many employers have a commitment to recruit people from diverse backgrounds.

Each year around 7,000 to 8,000 people qualify as solicitors in England and Wales. Recently, more women than men have been qualifying as solicitors and at least 18% of people qualifying have been from minority ethnic groups.

    Diversity Access Scheme

Our Diversity Access Scheme supports people from low socio-economic backgrounds who want to become solicitors.

The scheme offers 10 diversity scholarships each year. Each place includes:

    • a bursary to fund the Legal Practice Course (LPC)
    • mentoring support
    • work placements

    Social mobility

Our Social Mobility Ambassadors highlight diversity in the solicitors' profession.

Many solicitors have experienced socio-economic hurdles when pursuing their career in law. By showing the achievements of our ambassadors and sharing their stories, we hope to show that the profession welcomes talent, tenacity and a strong work ethic, regardless of social background.
