Mapping LGBT+ migration

Law Society RainbowLGBT+ immigration rights are a relatively recent innovation and, in the UK, were hard fought for.

Moving around the world presents specific challenges for LGBT+ individuals, couples and families, quite often to the extreme of needing to flee to find safety and security.

This podcast focuses on current themes and prospects for the future of LGBT+ clients who are moving or have moved to the UK, drawing on the experience of our speaker Tim Barnden - himself a gay lawyer with more than two decades of experience in practice in this area - to give an insight into key themes in practising in related areas of law.

This podcast covers:

  • a historical and legal/cultural overview
  • rules for couples
  • protecting refugees, and
  • prospects for the future.

Tim Barnden is a partner and head of immigration at Bates Wells Braithwaite.

Tim started in legal aid focusing on asylum and latterly private client advice with ongoing refugee work. He trained at Wilsons, moving into legal aid practice at Glazer Delmar before becoming a long-term team member at renowned immigration practice Wesley Gryk. Tim was recently appointed head of immigration at Bates Wells Braithwaite.

He is a long-term supporter and previous chair of trustees of UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group (UKLGIG). Tim is a trainer on couples' immigration rights and LGBT asylum for Immigration Law Practitioners Association (ILPA). He is also a keen gardener and former samba dancer!
