Powers of attorney for managing finances

Attorneys frequently have difficulties with banking and other financial institutions accepting power of attorney documents as evidence of an attorney's authority to act on behalf of a donor.

The purpose of this practice note is to provide information about the different powers of attorney that can be used when dealing with a financial organisation. This practice note is not applicable to using powers of attorney for dealings with property and land for which there are specific rules.

This practice note is the Law Society’s view of good practice in this area, and is not legal advice. For more information see the legal status.
