Why are lawyers in Afghanistan in danger?

Since the Taliban takeover in 2021, "everything has changed for women in Afghanistan". Our one-hour seminar examines the threats facing lawyers and access to justice.

To mark the Day of the Endangered Lawyer 2023, we held a joint seminar with Lawyers for Lawyers on 19 January, focusing on the situation in Afghanistan.

Our panellists discuss how the regime has impacted the rule of law, as well as giving rise to threats faced by lawyers and judges.

  • Marzia Babakarkhail, judge
  • Rafi Nadiri, lawyer and representative of the Afghan Independent Bar Association
  • Freshta Karimi, women’s rights activist
